Gender Studies everywhere - even in holidays ;)

Gender studies - the topic our seminarcourse is dealing with - really exists all the time and everywhere in our everyday life. So to give a personal example, I spent a few days of my whitsun holidays in Cologne. In one of these little souvenirs shops, I searched through the stands of postcards and found the following pieces:

One card was related to the "typical" behavior of women in big cities like Cologne, so they would run criss-cross the area and search for any kind of stores and places like for instance musees, jewelery stores, cafés, cinemas, shoe shops and so on.

The men on the other side would simply and only concentrate on the three most important places to go: the stadion to watch the 1.FC Köln play some nice soccer, the empties receipt to bring back the drunk up bottles of alcohol and of course the typical cologne pubs.

So this example of the two postcards which shows the stereotype of female and male behavior in regard to big cities, in this case in Cologne, represents the general attitude that women would just want to go around and see something of the place they visit and of course to go shopping whereas the men would just concentrate to have fun and see some sports but in particular to go and drink a beer with their mates in the given localities.

So you see the subject of gender studies don't let me go even in my freetime when I am in holidays .

Term Paper - Gender & Food: Conclusion (8)

In my term paper I tried to take a look at the most important gender relevant topics concerning food.

As a result of this work, I can clearly say that there are not just clichés existing but solid and verifiable facts which show the differences respectively also some similarities between the genders.

So to shortly sum up the prime points, women care all in all more about their nutrition what not always is just positive for instance in regard to dieting and the possibly resulting eating disorders which can even lead to death.
Other knowledge were the reasons why men drink respectively women eat huge amounts of chocolate, namely because of sorrows and also biological aspects, which by the way make the women’s life hard in regard of losing weight. We additionally learned that also the place where you eat or the time you take for eating is able to express gender. But the greatest differences we find in the topic what kinds of food men and women do eat, included the aspects alcohol and sweets. In the first one the men are leading whereas concerning the second one it is the other way around. Men also are leading in the consumption of meat, the women in contrast in the one of vegetables and fruits.

It is also the female population that gets mainly influenced and pressured by the media and the whole idealized glamour world by itself. So the highest number of psychical eating disorders is again on the side of the women. But it has also to be regarded that  the number of cases of men with eating disorders is raising as well.

To come to an end, the whole topic of food in our everyday life is full with gender related aspects. Maybe now you see the world around food with some other eyes, this is at least my personal result.

Term Paper - Gender & Food: Eating Disorders (7)

In this blog I want you to show up possible consequences of the dieting delusion which is mainly caused by the media and its daily influence as spoken to in the blog before.

So what serious effects can follow as a consequence of this emotional burden and the whole situation we are set out every day and over years is the topic of this last and the essay closing chapter: the eating disorders.
Eating disorders are characterized by a disturbed proportion to food and the own body. People with eating disruptions only think of food, weight and their physical appearance. There are three kinds of disorders existing, the anorexia, bulimia and the binge-eating-disorder. In regard to dieting, we only focus on the first two diseases, the anorexia and the eat-vomit-addiction (bulimia). After the Federal Center For Health Education (BZgA) today ca. 600 000 women in the age of 15 and 35 suffer bulimia and 100 000 suffer anorexia. The number of men suffering one of these disorders is ten times smaller, which shows that the eating disorders are typical female what is connected with the fact that women always want to look pretty and due to the media it exists the beauty ideal of thin women which causes these many cases of disorders usually arising out of previous diets. This last point is shown by a Australian longtime study with almost 2000 pupils in the age of 14 to 15 years over a time span of three years. It came out that two thirds of the girls made a diet in this time and of those who strictly complied with dieting every fifth developed eating disorders.
So as a result, the dieting delusion and with that the media which created this ideal of only being attractive and lucky if the body size fits bears the guilt of many diseased humans.  And the number of both men and women who get victims of these disorders is rising (in regard to anorexia the increasing rate is 24%). Very recently, I found an article in the daily newspaper “Badische Neueste Nachrichten“ who verifies this development which is amongst others caused by the aspect that more and more men start to think they would not correlate the ideal image and so also start to make diets. Michael Günter, professor at the university-clinic of Tubingen and medical specialist for psychiatry and psychotherapy approved that a pursuit of thinness developed in our society. “Who wants to be sexy has to be thin […]”, is the new way of thinking. This would be supported by TV-shows like “Germany’s next topmodel” by Heidi Klum and divers lifestyle magazines. But the main precondition would be the structure of identity and the social environment. Problems of the parents or even the case of sexual abuse can be triggers of getting psychical conditioned eating disorders. Professor Gunter also underlined the danger of the anorexia, which would be “the psychical disease with the highest death rate.” This would be the case due to the down implementation of heart, blood pressure and metabolism. Besides, the osteoporoses danger would rise because of the destroyed calc of the bones. In the worst case, people suffering anorexia could die as a consequence of heart still standing through lack of potassium because of vomiting.
So to sum up, eating disorders are serious addictions which can have dramatic followings. Therefore, it is necessary to pay attention if somebody in the personal environment behaves strange concerning the topic food.

Term Paper - Gender & Food: Dieting (6)

The famous becoming phenomenon this chapter will be about is the dieting.

Dieting is the process of purposely losing weight. The reasons therefore will be mentioned later in the chapter about the wherefores. Dieting was long ago only a female thing, but this is also about to change. The by me studied persons had as the very first question if they ever had done a diet or not. It was the first one to make clear what this all is going to be about. If you think of food especially in relation to gender, dieting is the point which comes almost through everybody’s mind. The outcome was that 57% of the female testing persons already had done at least one diet in their life, in contrast to only 14% on the men’s side. So in average more than every second women wanted/wants to reduce weight. Exact dates about the frequency of diets are not possible because the true number of women and men who made a diet cannot be collected. In another survey, 45% of the women and barely 20% of the men admitted that they had at least one diet behind them. Besides, 63% of the female testing persons stated they would daily risk a look at the pair of scales and 42% of the men would do so, too. So women are far ahead in the matter of diet delusion. This is also verified through the fact that women are rather able to really pull a diet through. The men cannot as good as they stick to a low-calorie and health-conscious way of nutrition; they would too often make little “deals” like for example: “just one little Hot Dog/piece of chocolate/etc”. So they have not such a great motivation in general to stay through a diet. This was again found out by scientists of the German Institute for Nutrition Research.

As you can see in the diagram above, women are always and especially in the younger days more successful in complying with a diet.

Now after the conditions all around dieting are clear, so that dieting is on its way up as well as the fact that women are leading the movement of trying to lose body weight, we can ask us about what the causes of this could be.

On the one side, there is the healthy aspect. Diets can be helpful and sometimes even necessary if a person is extremely overweighed, has very high levels of cholesterol respectively uric acid or a high blood pressure. In England for instance, the obesity rate is very high as you can see in the chart, and so it is also in the most western states.

Interesting is also the fact that the “trend” of being overweight even skips to the children, as the diagram shows. Every third boy and girl in England between 11 and 15 years is overweight or obese.
In the USA, obesity is also a present subject.  All in all, more women are affected because the body fat distribution differs in the genders; women carry more fat on their frames whereas men carry more fat within their frames. The reproductive cycling and childbearing in women causes changes in the body fat distribution. Besides, obesity can have a negative influence on the fertility and even raise the risk of a coronary artery disease through an increasing waist-hip proportion in females caused by the menopause. These anatomic and biological differences are also responsible that it suffices for men to fight against obesity and lose weight simply because of dieting, whereas the women again have disadvantages in regard of losing pounds due to not only eat less calories, but also to do lots of sports.
On the other side, to come back to the aspects which are responsible why many people decide to do a diet, there is the most frequent factor namely the psychological one. In our today’s society, we get confronted with slim thin pop-stars, models, actors and so on. In every woman’s magazine there are dozens of tips, tricks and diets to become pretty, to become pretty like everybody else seems to be. To be slim is put on a level with being fit, health and as just mentioned pretty. And to be fat is the biggest sin of all according to the lifestyle magazines. This dramatizes the situation still more because as we already know if women are unhappy and sad they betake to sweets which does not necessarily improve the situation of the women who feel to fat. By the way, this thin ideal runs contrary to the women’s desire for chocolate and desserts. So it is clear that the women feel too thick and do not like their body anymore not to speak of feeling comfortable in it. As a result, they begin a diet of which the market of gossip rags is flooded. Even in my survey with mostly younger testing persons, more than 70% of the women stated they would feel too thick and often uncomfortable in their body – in contrast to no single man.  All these images and visions and mediated ideal images come from the influence of the media in our daily life. In television, magazines, radio and of course in the advertisements all round us. These, in this case food adverts, are specialized on gender, too. In the men’s magazine “Front” for example, there was an ad for Big D Nuts with the slogan “grab your nuts”, so they on the one hand used a clear allusion connected with “male” humor and on the other side the commercial was for a product what can be associated with the inability of men to cook their own proper meals.
Against this whole influence of the media and the image that our society is imposed by them speaks that overweight in case of the women is less harmful to health than it is for the men. A longtime study of the Düsseldorf clinic for metabolic disease and nourishment with 6000 overweighed people showed that there are some “benefits” of having a few pounds too much. First, it is evolutional conditioned that the human body cares for saving some fat stores for famine times, it is something natural and unchangeable. Second, the human immune system can be enforced by fat cells which are able to protect against digestive infections, after the doctor Julia Rautenstrauch in the “Deutsche Medizinische Wochenzeitschrift”.  The cells would also be responsible for the production of the hormone leptin and so support the navigation of the T-helper cells. Third, the Italian gynecologist Alessandra Graziottin claims that for women in the age group 50 + a little bit more body fat can improve the sexual intercourse due to prevention of estrogens during the menopause. In addition, the female body shapes retain as well as the libido and the vagina stays wetter which is also an advantage in relation to sexual acting for the woman.
So as a first conclusion, the media influences our daily life and is responsible for the greatest part of diets and for the fact that the majority of women have to conquer against an unrealistic and idealized image of “natural” beauty.
A further, more illustrative contra point which underlines the arguments above is a movie I saw and which is attached to this essay. The title of the documentary is “Deutschland isst…” with the well-known TV-cook Tim Mälzer. He wants to find out what the best methods of dieting are and if they really help to reduce the body weight for a longer time or even permanent. Therefore, he starts a project with people who want to lose weight by trying different diets. The have to keep a video diary and furthermore their weight and stress levels etc. are regularly controlled by a specialist. Mr. Mälzer also talks to different persons who have to do with the food industry or woman magazines, advertisement and so on. The documentary is quite interesting, in particular what the specialist for influence by advertisement says, namely among others that we get up to 2500 times per day affected by the idealized and often with computer programs arranged pictures of slim and sporty women so that we at some time hardly have a chance to successfully react against this influence.
Finally it can be said that the influence of the media is more or less responsible for this whole dieting delusion. These unnatural images have in particular a very bad affect on children in puberty who dislike their body anyway. In addition, in the film the daughter of one dieting testing person suddenly doesn’t wanted to eat but make a diet like her mother, too. This shows how dieting, if not really necessary because of healthy risks, is something people see as well as exercise in a false way. Our view to the reality of nutrition gets impaired and subjective just as our behavior. Especially the emotional influenced women in regard to the eating habits have to suffer under this pressure of society and as a result they get more emotional burdened. It is a vicious circle, as much as the dieting with its yo-yo-effect although this whole circus is not necessarily needful as we can see in the statements of the two specialists Julia Rautenstrauch, Alessandra Graziottin and in the documentary of Tim Mälzer.

Term Paper - Gender & Food: Sweets (5)

Next to alcohol, a further “extra point” concerning the differences of what men and women eat are the sweets. So this blog will be about the behavior of men and women in regard to the amount of sweets as well as the reasons for eating them plus the consequences of this consumption.

Out of my survey I gained results in regard to the favorite sweets of the male relatively female persons who took part in the study. Salient here is the favor for chocolate on both sides. On the side of the women, it was a share of over 70%, on the side of the men at least over 40% who prefer chocolate. Another salient aspect I acquired with the help of my study is that there is no significantly difference in the frequency of men and women in regard of the consumption of sweets. On both sides, male and female, there were many persons who daily consume candies and Co. or at least very often during the week (in average five times [male] respectively six times [female]). So all in all, it depends on the different groups within the genders, why there are differences existing. British nutritionists found out through a study with nearly 2000 adults that the groups with the highest consumption of sweets can be divided in rather slimmer men and overweight women. The big difference between these two groups is that usually the men stay slim while the women become even fatter. The reasons for this fact are various:
Firstly, men eat sweets which approximately contain less calories like for example fruit gums, pralines and sweet pastries. All these things preferred by men are either less thick-making or at least more substantial so that other meals or snacks fall out. British researches had the result that single sugar inhibits the appetite by men which is again biological caused as by the digestion of alcohol. Completely different looks the side of the women. They on the one side prefer sweets with a high level of calories like for instance pudding, biscuits, full milk chocolate, cakes, crèmes, and desserts and so on, which are in addition not filling hunger. To demonstrate the different calorie contains of sweets which are generally preferred by men respectively women, in case of 100 g of nut-nougat-crème and the same amount of gummy bears, the proportion is 540 to 200 kcal. So on the other side, women nibble as often as men relatively a little bit oftener without letting drop any repast. These are some of the main causes why sweets cause the concerned women such problems.
Secondly, men eat sweets due to different reasons than women. The male hunger for sweets is partly determined through the need of sugar in the brain. When men feel difficulties in regard of their mental capacity they betake to candies. This is in so far very advantageous as that the demand of consuming sweets usually decreases which can be seen as a kind of “protection” for excessive eating of sweets.
Another interesting thing are the for many women typical regular cravings for chocolate.  According to recent studies, nearly 90% of the women (for comparison on the men’s side it is 20% less) get these attacks for chocolate. The answer is that women use chocolate not only to get sugar but also to receive primary products which are responsible for producing happiness-causing substances as endorphins (inhibits pain and causes euphorically sentiments) and serotonins. The latter named substance is the so-called “good-mood-hormone” because it effects a silent and balanced mood. As a result, if the serotonin level in the brain is higher, this also affects our mood in a positive way and of course the other way around. The problem concerning the women and their thick-making attacks on chocolate is that to certain times the level of serotonins as well as endorphins is quite low in comparison to the usual one. This is the case in the last weeks of the women’s cycle, after the ovulation. So this is also a biological aspect working “against” the female population.
But there is a further aspect influencing the women’s demand for sweets which already arose in regard to the reasons for drinking alcohol. There it was the case that men see alcohol as a relief valve to conquer respectively supplanting their sorrows. Here, concerning especially the sweets, chocolate has the part of being a comforter for depressed and desperate women. This emotional aspect is caused by the attitude of main parts of the society. From the beginning, girls receive chocolate in particular when they are sad, whereas boys rather get some chocolate as a reward. So girls in a way “learn” to improve their negative mood by eating some chocolate and as a consequence rather become emotional eaters.
All these facts, the sorts of sweets, saturation- as well as calories-level and biological aspects of providing sugar and eventually happiness hormones, are responsible that in fact there are no extreme differences in the amount of consuming sweets but doubtless in regard to the reasons why the eat them as well as what the “consequences” are.

Term Paper - Gender & Food: Alcohol (4)

In this blog I want to give you some information concerning the consumption of men respective women in regard to alcohol as well as the different reasons for drinking and the physically dealing with this legal drug.

So in the consumption of groceries, alcohol plays also a very important role through showing gender correlated differences. The amount and abundance of alcohol is clearly led by the men. They in average drink two times more alcoholic potables than women do. Another aspect is that the part of men of the approximately four million alcoholics in Germany is circa 80%, which by the way is extremely much. As a survey shows, men drink more than women and most notably more often than women. 24, 4% of the questioned men, 11 out of 45 persons, stated they would consume alcohol four times a week, whereas there was no women who drinks more than three times a week. My personal study can again verify these results that alcohol seems to be a male “subject”. So as a result I found out that the male responded are leading again in the consumption of both beer relatively wine (1 ¼ l against ½ l) and hard liquor (0,625 l against 0, 1 l). Wha is also very interesting is the high rate of completely non-drinking women I asked. Over 80% stated they would never drink alcohol or at least so less that it would not be worth to mention. This leads us to the question why men drink so much alcohol compared to the women and what the generally reasons for drinking of both genders are.

Concerning the men, there are different reasons which enforce them to drink alcoholic drinks. One reason is that even nowadays the drinking ability, the “skill” how much someone is able to drink, is also seen as typically male. That is the reason why especially younger boys want to prove themselves by drinking much alcohol. In this age in addition there is given the attraction of drinking alcohol simply because it is forbidden. And prohibited things are always interesting for minored children in puberty. Furthermore, and this is also what I found out in my survey, reasons for drinking alcohol are parties and birthday celebrations etc. where alcohol would guaranty a better and relaxed atmosphere and especially fun. Here comes moreover the point which was relevant in the chapter of the reasons for women to eat even if they are not hungry. There I found out that women often eat because of belonging to a community and feel togetherness e.g. by sitting in common and eat some cake etc. This can now be transmitted for the men and alcohol. For them, this feeling of belonging together arises if they sit with a few mates at a bar and jointly drink some beer. The extremer version is the binge drinking with friends, the excessive consume of alcohol. Then the men usually feel strong and unconquerable, which are typically male feelings and also liked by them.
Additionally, alcohol is a kind of relief valve for the men. The alcohol is often used to supplant their problems and to forget all the sorrows like exemplarily stress at work or with the girlfriend/wife etc., problems in the family, pressure to perform, midlife-crisis and more. Trough drinking, they purposely break the rules and drink alcohol also with knowing that it is bad and of course no solution, in contrast.
In the following chart there are listed up a few problem drinking indicators for both men and women. The table contains also some information about their respective behavior of consumpiton, so for instance the frequency of being drunk at least one time a week in the last 3 months which is again headed by the men with an average procentuage of 20% compared to 11% on the women’s side. Besides, it becomes clear that also the women betake to alcohol to steady their nerves or if they have trouble, especially at the age between 45 – 54 years (men earlier, between 25 – 34 years). So the causes are partly the sames, although not all reasons and not as distincted as by the men. So are women more influenced by their social environment as concerns the danger of getting an alcoholican. Interesting is also the fact of multiple drinking indicators which lead to the consum of alcohol which is the case for both genders.

A further, completely different argument for men drinking more alcoholic substances than women is the biological aspect which is the reason therefore that men are able to drink more alcohol with lower “consequences”. The male body can better handle with alcohol than the female due to an enyzme called alcohol dehydrogenase which is responsible for the predispersion of alcohol in the stomach. This enzyme is less excistent in the body of a woman which leads to higher alcohol level in the blood and therefore women get drunk earlier. This process is especially distinct by hard liquors because it is generally more difficult to digest that much alcohol and so the effect of getting drunken becomes even harder. In addition, the followings for the women are more dramatic because of their lower ability of  parting fatty acids. As a consequence, they have rather to suffer of fatty liver as well as liver cirrhosis (chronical liver disease). Besides, the alcohol ealier affects brain and heart.

So to sum up, it is proven that men in average consume more and also more frequently alcoholic substances than women do. This has biological as well as psychological reasons like the nature of the male body together with the feeling of togetherness and fun plus stress situations, crisises and trouble in general. Women in contrast have anatomic conditionned “disadvantages” in digesting alcohol and feel belonging more in sitting, talking and eating in common. Plus, they – in most cases - don’t feel like they had to show anybody how much alcohol they are able to drink etc.

Term Paper - Gender & Food: Kinds Of Food (3)

Continuing from the chapter before it is recognizable that there are various differences between the genders concerning the reasons of eating food. So as a result, there has to be some differences of what men and women eat, too. And so it is, like studies show.

Throughout the diagram above it becomes obvious that women (middle) lead in consuming fruits and vegetables. During the time of six years from 2001 (blue) to 2007 (red), the consumption of vegetables and fruits in England increased. Interesting is the fact that not only the women eat healthier but the men do so, too. This represents a new trend to a conscious way of nutrition whereas the women still eat more vegetables (over a third of women eat more than five portions of vegetables and fruits every single day) because they want to keep control over their body, for instance in form of having an overview about the amount of the nutrients in the incorporated nourishments. Women also often count the calories in their food, follow principles and try to stay under a certain limit. Through these guidelines, they feel good because the think they do something for their health and physical appearance and so they feel more attractive. Therefore it is necessary to be thin, is the cliché, given by the media and the society in general. This daily influence in magazines, TV-shows, advertisements and so on is nearer regarded in the relation to dieting and eating disorders, where this situation plays a main role.

Personally, I also started a survey concerning the topic gender and food where I wanted to find out in reality what the people think of this theme and of course what their eating behavior was like. I questioned about 30 people in my school and my environment, half male and half female. The results are very interesting, and during my essay I will bring in some facts I gained through this survey.

So at this place, I can verify the results of the study above with the knowledge of what the persons I asked responded. In my outcomes, over the half of the women stated they would eat at least one portion of vegetables every day, whereas the highest rate of the men was five times a week. So the stereotype of women eating more vegetables and “green stuff” seems to be not that false. Quite the contrary, women take more care of their way of nutrition, in fact they eat in average more than 100 g vegetables a day, which is 20% more than the men’s consumption. Besides, under the questioned peoples the sole vegetarian was female. But what is the reason for this situation? A possible explanation gives the division of work in regard to the purchase of food in prehistoric times. In those days, the growing of fruits and especially vegetables was the task of the woman while the man was hunting and building tools, huts, etc. So there is a connection between women and vegetables all along and this is also visible in the today living primitive cultures where the women still are responsible for working on the fields. Another indication is that in averts for vegetables usually women get addressed. As an example there was a slogan: “From Mother Earth to mummy’s table” (“Von Mutter Erde auf Muttis Tisch" ).

But there is also the trend recognizable that men take care of their way of nutrition as well. Their rates of daily consumption of carrots, collards and Co. are increasing. Furthermore, it is the case that especially young men become vegetarians or food combiner. This development of men regarding on their nourishment is among others visible through the fact that more and more men cook. It already exist cook-books for men and there are even courses for men to learn how to prepare their food on their own. Of course, this development is at the very beginning, except the gastronomical cooks where men by the way are dominating. Nevertheless, Cooking is still the main task of the women in the belief of big parts of the society but also often in reality.

A further point concerning the differentiations in regard of what men and women are eating is meat. Here we could conversely transmit what we found out about the consumption of vegetables. The men are leading in the consumption of meat with 71g per day in average whereas women get along with 10 g less. All in all, the whole meat consumption of men is about 20% higher than the women’s one. This situation of men consuming more meat than women do is also the case in the survey I did. There, over 40% of the male candidates said they would eat meat every day. If you look at the women’s answers, the highest respond was four times a week which fully underlines the numbers above concerning the gender depending consumption of meat. Further acknowledgement in regard of men seeming to be the main consumers and admirers of meat is given through a study which shows the generally dislike of especially younger women of red meat varieties and the more positive attitude of men in this point. In the study 206 women and men in the age of 14 to 30 had to evaluate attributions of different kinds of meat, from white to red. This attributes worsened with increasing level of red color intensity by the women, whereas the attitude of the male candidates was more positive. Another additional chart to show the consumption of meat, in this case the one of young people from the United Kingdom is the one you find at the following link: http://www.emeraldinsight.com/content_images/fig/0170340602006.png

(I'm sorry but I wasn't able to include the chart in this blog). There the amount of consumed meat is represented, divided in mean, median, minimum and maximum. As visible, boys in this study lead again in the consumption of meat with up to 393 g per day contrary to maximum 263 g per day for the girls.
Now the question arises, why now the men are leading in the eating of meat. Many people think the reason is that men have more muscles which contain out of proteins and so they had to eat much meat to get enough of this nutrient. Against this stands the fact that proteins are as well needed to sustain bones, the blood, sinews, skin and other organics. So women need also many proteins to stay healthy and therefore the thesis cannot be the truth. Scientifically regarded the need of proteins differs rarely between the genders. Women need about 1 g per kilogram body weight and men do so, too. Pregnant women even need twice the normal dose.
Beside these facts, there are other victuals existing which provide proteins. Tuna fish
for instance contains 23% of proteins per 100 g, lentils 24% and some cheese sorts (Roquefort; Cabrales) likewise over 20%, just to name a few protein containing viands.
A food chemist from Munich, Josef Wahler
, explained the popular belief that animal proteins would be better than the one of plants was a misapprehension. And these falsities would be responsible for a too high consumption of meat and in this way also for the thereof resulting negative aspects for health, especially for men as main consumers. Consequences of too much of meat and fat could be for example arterioscleroses or gout.

So what is then the reason why men eat so much meat? It is not essentially necessary for the nutrient content and in greater amounts even worse for health.

This also has to do with the former meaning of food, which was seen as something that makes men strong and more muscular. Moreover, Helene Karmasin from the Viennese institute of motivation research has the opinion that this favor for meat on the part of the men has again something to do with the prehistoric times, when men kind of overcame the nature in being successful as a hunter. This feeling could be one of the main points concerning the reasons why men in average eat so much meat.
As a consequence, the food industry is orientated in meat lasting food selling like for example in so-called “Stone edge-restaurants” where the mostly male guests have to eat with their fingers as in the former times. Another example are the big fast food chains such as Burger King or McDonalds and also the advertisement is specialized on men
. So in a TV-advert there was a father with his little son riding with the bike uphill and easily overtaking a group of road bikers. The message the viewer should get is that all this power would come from meat. This advertisement therefore forces the misbelieve of people that eating meat would be very good to became strong and healthy and of course successful because like in the commercial the father won the “competition” with the professional bikers.
This extremely overvalued character which gets attributed to meat of making someone strong and all in all more powerful together with the prehistoric argument of feeling like a successful hunter and of course also the fact that many people like it to eat food, which is as well influenced by the food industry, are the main reasons for the situation that men eat more meat than women do.
Generally, men like to eat good and proper meals like cutlets, roast meat and similar meals in contrast to women who prefer lighter food like pasta and salads. Already for breakfast many men betake to ham and eggs, while women prefer cheese and fruit jam.

Finally, it becomes obvious that there definitely are differences existing in regard of what men and women are eating.
